Woman enjoying music from her youth and feeling younger

Why Does Music From My Youth Make Me Feel Younger?

Why does music from my youth make me feel younger? Because those songs aren’t simply music. They are connected to who we were, how we felt and some of the biggest moments of our lives.

One familiar opening note can take me back faster than any photograph ever could.

Suddenly, I remember what I was wearing, where I was living, who I was with and what kind of car we were driving. I can almost feel the warm vinyl seats and hear the radio playing—with no phone, no playlist and no way to skip the song we didn’t like.

And for the next three minutes, I don’t feel 60.

I feel like the girl who first heard that song.

Why Does Music From Our Past Feel So Powerful?

Most of us have certain songs that are tied to an entire chapter of our lives.

There were songs we played while getting ready to go out, songs we danced to, songs that helped us through a breakup and songs that still remind us of a person we haven’t seen in decades.

We didn’t deliberately sit down and decide to memorize every word. We heard those songs repeatedly while we were living through emotional and important experiences.

The music and the memory became connected.

That is why a song you haven’t heard in 30 years can come on and somehow you still know every word—but you can’t remember where you put your glasses five minutes ago.

I wrote more about that strange little midlife mystery in Why Can I Remember Every Word to a Song From 1975… but Forget Why I Walked Into the Kitchen?.

Apparently, our brains have excellent long-term storage. The filing system just becomes a little questionable after 50.

Why Can an Old Song Make Me Feel Young Again?

Music doesn’t only remind us of what happened. It can bring back the emotions we felt at the time.

You might remember the freedom of driving around with your friends, dancing without worrying about your knees or staying out much later than you would even consider now.

For a few minutes, you reconnect with that younger version of yourself.

She didn’t disappear. She has simply gained a few decades of experience, better judgment and a much stronger appreciation for going to bed at a reasonable hour.

That may be why nostalgia feels so comforting. It reminds us that we are still the same person underneath all the changes that have happened around us—and inside us.

Feeling Younger and Aging Younger Aren’t Exactly the Same

A favorite song can make me feel younger almost instantly.

But feeling younger and supporting how my body is aging are two different things.

We all have our actual age—the number on our driver’s license—and our biological age, which reflects how our body is aging internally. Two women can both be 60 and feel completely different when it comes to energy, strength, stamina and how well they bounce back.

That distinction has become much more interesting to me as I’ve gotten older.

I don’t expect to be 25 again. Honestly, I wouldn’t want to repeat all those lessons. But I do want the energy and stamina to keep traveling, working from the beach, building my businesses and enjoying the life I’ve created.

I don’t want to sit on the sidelines simply because the calendar says I’m getting older.

Do You Know Your Biological Age?

There is a Bio-Age assessment that looks at the everyday factors influencing how you are aging and gives you a personalized place to begin.

You can take the appropriate assessment here:

For Canadians: TAKE THE CANADIAN BIO-AGE QUIZ

For Americans: TAKE THE U.S. BIO-AGE QUIZ

Your result isn’t about making you feel bad about your current age. It gives you more information about where you are now and the habits and support that may help you move in a better direction.

What I’m Doing to Support Healthy Aging

Learning about biological age is also what caught my attention about the healthy-aging supplement I’m using.

Shopping from Canada? You can find it here.

It is designed to support healthy aging from the inside instead of only focusing on what aging looks like on the outside. It is clinically proven to reverse eight years of cellular aging in just two months. And because it comes with an empty-bottle money-back guarantee, you can actually try it for yourself without worrying about wasting your money if it isn’t right for you.

One woman shared her experience after using it for ten weeks:

“My energy is through the roof! Stronger in the gym! More stamina. Better endurance. Resting better! Better focus! Bring on the longevity!”

I have more energy and I am sleeping a lot better!

That is the kind of healthy aging that interests me—not simply looking younger, but having the energy, strength and stamina to keep enjoying my life.

For me, this isn’t about chasing youth.

It’s about helping my body keep up with the life I still want to live.

So yes, I’ll continue turning up the old songs, singing every word and wondering why today’s music doesn’t have quite the same magic.

But I’m also paying much closer attention to what I can do now to support the woman I want to be ten or twenty years from today.

Because the music may take us back—but we still have plenty of life ahead of us.
